The Low-Sodium Guide To Fast Food & Chain Restaurants

Last Updated: 8/4/2026
Note: All sodium counts are calculated using official restaurant nutrition facts published at the time of writing. However, portion sizes vary by kitchen staff, and chains regularly update their suppliers and recipes. Use these numbers as a benchmark, and always check the restaurant’s current online nutrition PDF to verify before you order.

Grabbing food on the go on a low-sodium diet can feel like an absolute minefield. Unlike sit-down restaurants where a cook can prepare raw ingredients from scratch in a clean pan, fast food and chain restaurants rely heavily on pre-portioned, heavily preserved ingredients designed for speed and consistency.

However, eating fast food on a salt-restricted diet isn’t impossible—it just requires a different strategy. With a little insider knowledge and the right ordering hacks, you can comfortably navigate drive-thrus and counter-service chains on busy days.

What to Know Before You Order

Use the “20-Location” Rule to Your Advantage

If a restaurant chain in the U.S. has 20 or more locations, they are legally required to publish full nutrition facts. You can almost always find this link hidden at the very bottom (footer) of their website next to things like “Contact Us” or “Privacy Policy.”

  • Pro Tip: Look for downloadable PDF nutrition guides rather than interactive menu builders. The PDFs usually break down individual ingredients—like buns, plain patties, and specific sauces separately—making it super easy to math out custom orders.

Unseasoned Burger Patties Are an Easy Customization

Most burger chains automatically hit their beef patties with a heavy shaker of salt and pepper as soon as they hit the grill. However, because patties are cooked to order, almost every major chain can cook fresh, unseasoned patties with zero added salt if you ask politely when ordering.

The French Fry Trap

Asking for fries cooked with “no added salt” is a classic trick, but it doesn’t automatically mean the fries are low-sodium. Many major chains use fries that are processed, blanched, or brine-soaked in factories long before they ever hit the restaurant’s freezer.

While asking the kitchen not to salt them at the fryer definitely helps, the potato itself might already carry a surprising amount of built-in sodium. Always check the base nutrition guide before assuming a plain fry is completely safe!

  • Fresh-Cut vs. Plain Frozen Cuts:
    • In-House Fresh Cut: Places like Five Guys and In-N-Out slice whole raw potatoes right in the store, meaning requesting them unsalted gives you a 100% natural, zero-added-sodium potato.
    • Plain Frozen Cuts: Other spots like Wingstop, Portillo’s, and Raising Cane’s use pre-cut frozen fries. In my personal experience and to my taste, these don’t seem to have a heavy factory brine base, so asking for a fresh batch with no salt added at the fryer has worked really well for me—though it’s still worth checking the chain’s official nutrition facts to be certain.

Bring Your Own Sauces

Fast food sauces, ketchups, and dressings are major sodium delivery systems—a single dipping tub or dressing packet can easily pack 300–600 mg of sodium on its own. Bringing along your own low-sodium ketchup, no-salt mustard, or a favorite dipping sauce from home allows you to flavor plain burgers, grilled chicken, or salad greens without taking on a ton of extra salt.
